National and Subnational Plans for Primary Prevention and Early Detection of Oral and Oropharyngeal Cancer: A Scoping Review

02 Jun 2025

An article titled "National and subnational plans for primary prevention and early detection of oral and oropharyngeal cancer: a scoping review" which used ICCP portal's repository of national cancer control plans and NCD plans has been published by a group of researchers in Brazil. The scoping review found that although the WHO recommends the development of oral health promotion and prevention policies—including those targeting oral and oropharyngeal cancers— many WHO Member States still do not incorporate such strategies into their national cancer or NCD plans. While many plans identified alcohol consumption, HPV infection, and sun exposure as risk factors for liver, cervical, and skin cancers respectively, they failed to associate these same factors with oral and oropharyngeal cancers. Similarly, several plans discussed tobacco control strategies to prevent
lung cancer and other diseases but did not emphasize the risk for oral and oropharyngeal cancer.
