Colombia launches new national cancer control plan 2026–2035

07 Jul 2026

The Government of Colombia has adopted the Decennial Cancer Control Plan 2026–2035, establishing a national framework to strengthen cancer prevention, early detection, timely diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and palliative care over the next decade.

Led by the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, the new Plan aims to address longstanding inequities in access to cancer services and improve outcomes across the country, with a particular focus on regions facing the greatest health system challenges. A key feature of the strategy is its territorial approach, which will enable interventions to be tailored to the specific needs and capacities of departments and municipalities, helping to reduce regional disparities in cancer care.

The Plan also promotes a more people-centred model of care by strengthening the health workforce, encouraging community participation and improving the use of health information for decision-making. Technical assistance and implementation support will be provided to local authorities beginning in the second half of 2026, with ongoing monitoring and integration into local health plans through 2035.

Through this long-term commitment, Colombia seeks to ensure that all people affected by cancer can access comprehensive and equitable care, regardless of where they live.

The full plan is now available on the ICCP Portal in Spanish.
