International HPV Awareness Day aims to promote education about human papillomavirus (HPV), raise awareness about prevention and encourage governments and individuals to take advantage of the HPV vaccine and screening for cancer. HPV causes cervical cancer which is the second most common cancer in women living in less developed regions with an estimated 445 000 new cases in 2012 (84% of the new cases worldwide) but there is also evidence linking HPV with cancers of the anus, vulva, vagina and penis.1
