A new web-based tool called “NCD MAP” released by the ICCP Partner WHO, helps policy-makers and practitioners through the process of developing, implementing, and monitoring national multisectoral NCD plans based on effective use of available resources.
The new tool provides guidance on assessing situation, engaging relevant stakeholders, setting national NCD goals, targets, objectives and priorities for action, identifying roles and responsibilities of relevant stakeholders, define milestones, timeframe, outputs and outcomes, developing implementation plan and monitoring the progress in implementing the NCD MAP. Countries are encouraged to adapt this tool to their national context.
In what way is this tool useful for cancer planners?
According to Dr Ruitai Shao, Programme Management Adviser in NCDs at WHO who developed the the tool, “the NCD MAP not only provides an overall guidance on development, implementation and evaluation of national multisectoral action plan for integrated prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases including cancer within framework of national health plan and development agenda, but also recommends approaches to conducting comprehensive assessment of situation, engaging with relevant stakeholders, prioritizing activities together with tools, templates, and other resources as well as key components of a national NCD MAP and monitoring & evaluation, which are also useful resources for cancer control planners to develop and implement national cancer control programmes. On the other hand, national cancer planers are encouraged to incorporate cancer control into national integrated NCD MAP in order to achieve overall national NCD targets.”
