The ICCP has launched a new thematic page exploring the critical link between Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and cancer and the importance of addressing this in National Cancer Control Plans (NCCPs).
AMR threatens cancer care globally, with drug-resistant infections causing over 1.27 million deaths in 2019. Cancer patients are especially vulnerable due to treatment-related immunosuppression, facing up to three times the risk of AMR infections compared to non-cancer patients.
Despite this, AMR is rarely addressed in NCCPs. The new page offers practical resources for cancer planners to integrate AMR strategies into national plans - supporting infection prevention and control, antimicrobial stewardship, and access to essential antimicrobials.
