Nigeria marked World Cancer Day 2026 by unveiling a new National Cancer Control Plan (NCCP), reaffirming the country’s commitment to tackling its growing cancer burden. The government announced the plan as part of a renewed push to strengthen the country’s capacity for cancer prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment, and research.
Key elements of the new National Cancer Control Plan

- Improved screening and early detection: Broader access to early detection services for common cancers to improve survival outcomes.
- Upgraded diagnostic capacity: Investments in more advanced diagnostic tools and improved availability of imaging and pathology services nationwide.
- Strengthened treatment services: Plans to enhance the quality and reach of oncology care, including radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
